Long-range atom-surface interactions for cold atoms

چکیده
Studies of the long-range interactions between cold atoms and surfaces are now of vital interest. The interest is partly driven by nanotechnology applications, partly by the exploding interest in the encompassing superfield of Casimir effects, and partly by the burgeoning overlap between atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter, and quantum optics. This tutorial lecture will address long-range atom-surface interactions for cold atoms, including an overview of Casimir-Polder interactions and their various manifestations. Some previous theoretical studies that are of particular relevance will be reviewed. In addition some different approaches to the problem and corresponding results, especially concerning the effects of substrate composition, geometry, and finite temperature, will be discussed.

Cold atom dynamics in a quantum optical lattice potential.
We study a generalized cold atom Bose-Hubbard model, where the periodic optical potential is formed by a cavity field with quantum properties. On the one hand, the common coupling of all atoms to the same mode introduces cavity-mediated long-range atom-atom interactions, and, on the other hand, atomic backaction on the field introduces atom-field entanglement. This modifies the properties of th...
متن کاملAtom induced cavities and tunable long-range interactions between atoms trapped near photonic crystals
Achieving tunable and coherent long-range interactions between cold atoms is an outstanding challenge. We propose a solution based on the powerful new platform of cold atoms trapped near nano-photonic systems. We show that atoms trapped near photonic crystals act as dielectric elements that seed localized cavity modes around the atomic position. This enables a dynamic form of “all-atomic” cavit...
متن کاملMagnetic interactions of cold atoms with anisotropic conductors
We analyze atom-surface magnetic interactions on atom chips where the magnetic trapping potentials are produced by current carrying wires made of electrically anisotropic materials. We discuss a theory for time dependent fluctuations of the magnetic potential, arising from thermal noise originating from the surface. It is shown that using materials with a large electrical anisotropy results in ...

We demonstrate experimentally that a single Rb atom excited to the 79d 5/2 level blocks the subsequent excitation of a second atom located more than 10 µm away. The observed probability of double excitation of ∼ 30 % is consistent with a theoretical model based on calculations of the long range dipole-dipole interaction between atoms. Blockade interactions whereby a single particle prevents the...
متن کاملControlling the interactions between cold Rydberg atoms by a time-varying electric field
Long-range interactions between cold Rydberg atoms are being investigated for neutral-atom quantum computing, quantum simulations, phase transitions in cold Rydberg gases and other applications. Fine tuning of the interaction strength can be implemented using Förster resonances between Rydberg atoms controlled by an electric field. The observation of the Stark-tuned Förster resonances between R...
